Chinese New Year Celebration

Chinese New Year Celebration

Redwood Park Academy celebrated the beginning of the Year of the Pig 2019 in the school assembly on Friday 1st February.

Pupils and staff learnt about the different zodiac animals that are used to help celebrate the most important date in the Chinese calendar. The assembly went through what Chinese New Year means to the Chinese people and the ways that they celebrate. Various examples were shared including room decorations, cultural hats and outfits, a video of a dancing dragon and pictures of different festive decorations. Pupils experienced what it was like to receive a red envelope that is traditionally given to children during the New Year celebrations with a gift or surprise. Each class then enjoyed a culinary competition using chopsticks whilst tasting some Asian food including Prawn crackers, Spring rolls, Noodles and a tangerine.

The assembly ended with a reflection of how different cultures celebrate different celebrations and how we could compare these to events that we celebrate in our year.
