Welcome to the new School Year

Welcome back!

We’ve had a great start to the new academic year and have really enjoyed seeing everyone again after the summer break.

We started by welcoming our new pupils and staff who have joined the Redwood Park team. It’s been great to see everyone settling in so well and helping each other get to grips with new classes and routines and there are already lots of really exciting things taking place! As always our focus is on practical learning that enables pupils to develop the skills they need with a focus on independence, working together for success and opportunities to apply what theyve learned through visits out and about in the community.

We have lots to look forward to this term!  Our chickens have returned safely from their summer break and are once more settled in their run on our school allotment that is blooming with produce after the warm, wet weather. Kayaking at North Harbour Lake will start shortly, as will our Forest Schools programme.  We also have a professional potter coming in to work with some Key Stage 3 pupils. We look forward to seeing their clay creations! Key stage 4 pupils will also be starting to think about the future by following their accreditation programmes. This includes Year 10 Life Management pupils focusing on volunteering and enterprise whilst the Year 11 start their college visits.

This year there will also be increased opportunities for pupils to develop their leadership skills by applying for positions on the school council. This is as well as the Redwood Teams competition which are due to be launched next week. Everyone is already very excited about and although the word is that Victory team  - who claimed the trophy at the end of last year - are feeling confident they can retain their title, this year it is all to play for!! New pupils and staff have been allocated their teams (one out of Endeavour, Victory, Adventure, Discovery) so that everyone is ready when the competition begins! The first team event will be the Sponsored Walk towards the end of September. We can’t wait!

At Redwood Park we always finish off the week with our Whole School Assembly where we come together as a school to reflect on our weekly theme and to celebrate success. This week as well as thinking about working together we thought about ‘National Doodle Day’ which is an initiative run by the charity Epilepsy in Action. Each pupil was given the opportunity to make  their mark by creating their own personal doodle. Unsurprisingly we have ended up with some fabulous creations, all of which have gone into our very own Redwood Park Academy Doodle Album. They are all very different but each one as important as the other!
